Tibetan Medicine Tours India
Tibetan medicine is a highly effective medical tradition, which uses medicines derived from nature that have no lasting negative side effects. The philosophy behind Tibetan medicine is one of compassion to prevent and cure suffering using the resources of nature to address bodily ills. Practiced in central Asia for hundreds of years, learned Tibetans began to develop their medical knowledge from the Fourth century A.D. onwards. Tibet grew in recognition as a land of medicine, because of the knowledge and skill of its doctors and healers.
In traditional Buddhist beleief - the gift of medicine is believed to have been bestowed by Buddha. This is symbolized by the Medicine Buddha who is shown holding a branch of the Myrobalan plant in his right hand. This plant is used in traditional Tibetan medicine to cure illnesses of the body and mind. The left hand rests on his lap with the palm upwards in the mudra or gesture of bestowing a gift, symbolized by the pot with medicinal leaves. Buddha is believed to have given both gifts of knowledge such as medicine and spiritual inspiration and guidance to his disciples.
Tibetan medicine is practiced in many parts of India where Tibetans reside. Dharamsala and McLeodganj in North India are locations where many Tibetan medical practitioners can be found.
